The B Engines: 350, 361, 383, and 400 | Allpar Forums The two 383 engines (by Curtis Redgap) The Chrysler 383 RB was an odd engine, created because Chrysler wanted a 383 but the factory could only produce enough 383 "B" engines for Dodge, Plymouth, and DeSoto However, the new RB assembly line was under-used; so an RB 383 was created, in two and four barrel versions, for two years
The RB Engines: 383 - 413 - 426 - 440 | Allpar Forums Chrysler engineers created a 383 engine out of the RB 413 block, with a narrower bore - so there was a large-bore, short-stroke Dodge 383 and a small-bore, long-stroke Chrysler "Golden Lion" 383 The 383 RB was only available in 1959 and 1960 on the US-built Chrysler Windsor and Saratoga (thanks, Ian Smale and Bill Watson)
1971 383 4BBL SUPER COMMANDO? - Allpar Forums Two-barrel 383 was a big “economy” engine Four-barrel was performance Not sure about 1971 but in earlier years there was a regular-cam 383 and a performance-cam 383, both four-barrels, as well I wish I could remember which years had which engine marketing but I'd be sure you have the performance-cam 383
383 vs. 400 - Allpar Forums 383-4: 300 gross hp, 250 net hp Compare the NET numbers above to the 1972 400 specifications: 400-2: 190 hp 400-4: 255 hp Compression in 1971 was 8 5:1, in 1972 8 2:1 So the decrease in compression was offset by the increase in displacement In other words, by the time of transition from 383 to 400 they were pretty evenly matched
Sibling Rivalry 360 vs. 383 - Allpar Forums The 383 has a shorter stroke than the 360, and even longer rods, so the rod angularity is virtually nil This allows there to be minimal bore wear over time 383's have been, and are known as longevity motors 360's last, but not to the same degree and not as often
Dodge Polara: from trim to top car - Allpar Forums The Polara had a four barrel big block, I think a 383 but Dodge also used 361s in the Polara Matador line It was not the high performance version as it had single exhaust It was a torquer motor and could move the car along okay In late 1960, dad got a 1961 Dart Phoenix with a 383 ram inducted motor That car was quick! The 400 V8: Final Mopar Big Block Engine - Allpar Forums For years, the largest "B" engine was the 383 cubic inch V8 The company created a raised block with the 1959 cars; the new "RB series" would go up to 440 cubic inches The numerous engine sizes raised costs a bit, so Chrysler started working to standardize all the big block engines on a 4 32" bore (according to racer and historian Rick Ehrenberg)
Plymouth Barracuda - the early, sporty, Euro-style cars - Allpar Forums On the other hand, a relatively stock 1968 383 Barracuda ran the quarter in 14 20 @ 100+, using 3 23:1 gears and a 4-speed (Performance for the Chrysler Car Enthusiast, March 1992) The 340 cubic inch engine used starting in 1968 provided the best of both worlds: relatively light weight with amazing speed

1969 Dodge Charger 383 4BBL, 4 Speed, w AC Production. . . So the fact that this car was a 383 4-barrel, 4-speed manual, AC car is noteworthy The only consistent info I've found (meaning I've seen it in at least a couple of places) is that for 1969 (out of 17,308 total 383 4-BBL Chargers), 383 4-BBLs w 4-speed manuals generated sales of approximately 3,579 units, which was less than 5% of the total
