POWs feigning madness to get repatriated - Straight Dope I’ve found lots of vague references to this online but I can’t find any actual examples During the second world war and other conflicts POWs would do things like taking their pet brick for a walk to try to be declared mad - and occasionally it actually worked and they were repatriated in wounded prisoner swaps! Wife would come home from work to a messy house, dirty kid, and a husband feigning ignorance on what was supposed to be done Now I’ll concede that some stay at home moms pull the lazy con as well But I would argue that women unfairly pull the lion’s share of the work in either situation
Profitability of slavery vs. sharecropping - Straight Dope One slave looking to get out of work by feigning sickness would inevitably “infect” the whole plantation–an unacceptable prospect So for the cold-hearted bastard overseer, it made complete sense to ignore all cries and signs of illness among the slaves and work them to the bone…at least until harvest time was over
Irene Forsyte: Beautiful victim, or ugly bitch? Feigning passion wasn’t required, but basic politeness would suggest some recognition of his efforts Would it be that hard to acknowledge enjoying a social activity alongside him?
Did George III ever say anything after Washington retired? That like Caesar or Napoleon or Bolivar, he was only feigning reluctance for popular effect and would ultimately seize power So these people were amazed when Washington followed through and really did voluntarily retire
