It was an appeal towards playing earlier styles of RPG, especially earlier editions of D D, but sometimes other early games too (Traveller, Runequest, etc) Some can be 'retroclones' that stay close to the design of original games with occasional tweaks while others have different rules but still attempt to capture some sort of sensibility
