Re: First boat build, an Elegant Punt My first Elegant Punt was entirely marine plywood and Douglas fir On the second I used ash for the chines and gunwales There is considerable bending involved so I would suggest following Mr Payson’s suggestions about reducing the chine and gunwale dimensions

I second (third forth) the elegant punt I have built or helped build more then a few over the years Knock it together in a weekend and it is a good little boat If you do build one there are a few little things that are hard to do (bending the chines for one) but all in all pretty easy

If somebody built a Bolger Elegant Punt that weighed 104 lb, they were *not* building to plans, or that is the total weight with spars, sail, daggerboard, oars, the works Plans say a hull weight of about 50 lb, so even with oarlocks and the seat it shouldn't weigh much more than about 60 lb set up as rowing tender
- daggerboard instead of leeboard for Bolger Surf, Teal, etc.
I built a Bolger Elegant Punt with the leeboard It worked great I didn't even bother to switch sides with it until I was goaded into it by some "purists " I would do a wooden board with a nice foil shape instead of a metal plate The metal plate has no real advantages in this size and type of boat Brian

Re: First boat build, an Elegant Punt As a result of the bottom being a little different from the plans, but the side panels being exactly as drawn, the amount of flair was not constant The flair at the stern was held in place by the transom, but it starter decreasing as you move towards the bow until the side panels were nearly plumb about
