人の移動分野では、タイ人スパ・セラピスト及び介護福祉士の日本への受入並びに日本人のタイにおける滞在及び労働許可の取得に係る条件の緩和について検討するため現在協議中である。 このほか我が国は、自動車や鉄鋼等の産業協力、農業協力等を実施している。 タイは、ASEAN内では第1位の貿易相手国であるが、日本からの輸出品のほとんどが有税かつ高関税であったため、本協定の発効による関税撤廃のメリットは大きい。 また、タイにとって日本は第1位の投資国であり、多くの日本企業が進出しており（2010年現在、日本商工会議所加盟数がASEANで最大）ASEANにおける日本企業の中核的な生産拠点である。
