On Wednesday at 16:45 CDT there was an EF-2 tornado in Bryan, Texas The tornado was unusual in that it was produced by a low topped supercell I found a monograph about this type of supercell here: Mini Supercell Thunderstorms The radar screenshot below (from 16:40 CDT) shows the supercell

Can a tornado only be produced by a supercell? If that is the case, why the heck did they issue tornado warnings here in colorado for a severe thunderstorm? I thought severe thunderstorms could produce tornados as well, but the way the weather man made it sound was only supercells produce tornados, while regular severe thunderstorms would produce only gustnados or landspouts? Did I understand

As with everything in meteorology, there are (rare) exceptions The April 29, 2022, Wichita-Andover Tornado had such a high base (see radar imagery below) that it appeared the tornado's circulation was detached from the supercell It could have been misinterpreted as a side lobe But, these are rare Happy and safe chasing in 2024!!

I consider this case somewhat analogous to Greensburg, with a nighttime, northward-moving, intense, cyclic supercell (which also produced the Blackwell F5) The sketches of the radar echoes at the time are actually somewhat similar to the Greensburg Trousdale storm

Not sure on total storm size, but the largest documented mesocyclone on record may be the Superior NE supercell from June 22, 2003 (the same day and just south of the famous Aurora hail event) This was sampled by the Eldora radar during BAMEX operations, and Roger Wakimoto has a few slides from preliminary analysis of the event starting here:
