For years, the largest "B" engine was the 383 cubic inch V8 The company created a raised block with the 1959 cars; the new "RB series" would go up to 440 cubic inches The numerous engine sizes raised costs a bit, so Chrysler started working to standardize all the big block engines on a 4 32" bore (according to racer and historian Rick Ehrenberg)

383-4: 300 gross hp, 250 net hp Compare the NET numbers above to the 1972 400 specifications: 400-2: 190 hp 400-4: 255 hp Compression in 1971 was 8 5:1, in 1972 8 2:1 So the decrease in compression was offset by the increase in displacement In other words, by the time of transition from 383 to 400 they were pretty evenly matched

The Polara had a four barrel big block, I think a 383 but Dodge also used 361s in the Polara Matador line It was not the high performance version as it had single exhaust It was a torquer motor and could move the car along okay In late 1960, dad got a 1961 Dart Phoenix with a 383 ram inducted motor That car was quick!
