The Alamo gun would have been made of cast iron which is naturally brittle, plus the iron was over 100 years old Iron technology had progressed considerably from the 1740's to the 1860's, but iron guns did fail during the Civil War and the trunnions that I have heard of being knocked off during the War came from being struck by projectiles
