In your original question you described two accounts in Thunderbird, one Yahoo, one Gmail, with their inboxes behaving differently I thought you meant that the Gmail account highlights the newest unread which is what you want, and the Yahoo account highlights the newest read message

Normally, I just open the e-mail, see what it is and delete if junk without scrolling to the end of the message By scrolling to end of one junk e-mail I can now delete again like normal upon opening without the need to read the entire e-mail or scroll to the end
