You are thinking about the problem completely wrong The task is not "how do I convert between big-endian and little-endian values" The task is "how do I convert floating point and integer values in a particular format to my platform's native format" If you do it right, the native format can be big endian, little endian, mixed endian, or ternary for all your code cares
