I believe the 282 and 288 are completely different engines The first comes from the Packard 120 introduced in 1936, the other a brand new post war design made in 288 327 and 359 cu in versions

Okay, thinking out loud here: packardinfo com says the Borg-Warner T85 was the 3-speed used behind both the I-8 and the V8 and that therefore the early Ford T-10 4-speed is a bolt-up to the Packard bellhousing
