石仏の「万治」は、この石仏を建立した願主が、万治3年（西暦1660年）と刻まれているところによるものです。 明暦3年（1657年）、諏訪高島三代藩主忠晴が、諏訪大社下社春宮に遺石の大鳥居を奉納しようとした時のこと。 命を受けた石工がこの地にあった大きな石を用いようとノミを打ち入れたおり、はからずもその石から血が流れ出た。 驚き恐れた石工は大鳥居の造作を止め、あらためてこの不思議な石に阿弥陀様を刻み、霊を納めながら建立された・・とされているのがこの石仏です。 この石仏は自然石で石質は安山岩でつくられています。 高さ・・・・・2m60cm 横・・・・・・3m80cm 奥行き・・3m70cm 胴回り・・・11m85cm 顔の長さ・・65cm 顔周り・・・・1m38cm

「万次の石仏」 があるのは、長野県の諏訪湖北部に広がる下諏訪町。 諏訪大社の 下社春宮 から徒歩で5分ほど、砥川を渡った森の中に鎮座しています。 高さは2m60㎝と、人の背丈よりわずかに大きい。 マグマが冷えて固まった安山岩によって造られています。 この石仏は、江戸時代である 万治3年 (1660年)に建立されました。 誕生には伝説が残されており、要約するとこんな感じです。 諏訪大社下社春宮の鳥居をつくるため、石工が石を加工しようとノミを入れたところ、その穴から血が流れ出します。 石工たちはこの不思議な現象に恐れをなし、この石を石仏として崇めたそう。 ちなみに万治という元号は非常に短く、わずか2年9ヶ月の期間しかありません。
