The halibut arent line shy so you can tie on 10-20lb test behind the lure and get away with it fine The halibut tend to hunker down in holes in the first or 2nd trough, and pretty much every legal i have caught out of the surf was no more than 30 ish feet from shore Fish the slack high tides and find the holes
