That looks like a rigging hatchet I've got a modern Vaughn rigging hatchet that looks similar Boiled linseed oil and turpentine mixed 50:50 will penetrate into the handle This used to be used by 19th century government arsenals to refurbish musket stocks

Like I said in the "broke a tool" thread, you should be able to hammer all day long with the hammer side of a roofing hatchet It's a hammer Hammering with it is not abuse If a roofing hatchet or riggers hatchet is what you want to try, get a Vaughn, American made, way less money, and see if you can find something wrong with it

A good angle is about what you end up with after you file sharpen it and stone it to a good edge I just go by eye and feel for all of my hatchets and axes If it looks right and does what you want it to do, its a good angle If it doesn't look or work right, its not It also depends on the shape and profile of the hatchet

My little brother was given an old hatchet There are a couple small nicks in the blade edge, but nothing horrible I can file it out But is there a specific angle I should be aiming for when it comes the edge? The head doesn't seem to have any crazy profile from the manufacturer I'm sure its straight forward, but it never hurts to axe

I was given this for a project from a friend of mine, he wanted to see what i could do with it, it was a rusty blob but i soaked in in vinegar for a week, the letters GTW are shown but thats it, think its a roofing or shingling hatchet maybe? I have a handle i am making for it as well EDIT

I have a Husqvarna Hatchet and a Cold Steel Magnum Kukri that I use regularly and the blade prep on the machete is the game changer The Kukri came from Cold Steel with a "utility grind" which is code for dull I spent about an hour with an angle grinder and some sharpening stones to bring the machete into serviceable condition
