One place to start is do you have that third party modem in bridge mode The best way to use the modem is to set it in bridge mode and get yourself a nice router (I suggest the nighthawk by netgear!) Getting something this caliber can help out a lot with gaming streaming I only have 3mbps DSL and with the nighthawk and a bridged modem, I can game online with a ping of around 40 I do play
