I do not reccomend milking precocious animals If someone DOES milk them, I suggest managing them as a real dairy animal - milking 2+ times per day, teat wash, teat dip, nutritional support all is necessary for a lactating animal Preventing mastitis includes clean dry bedding, adequate post milking dip, and regular milkout

Most things I'm reading say a precocious milker would have an udder on both sides so maybe that isn't even a possible cause, in that case Also, if she is bred and forming an udder at this age (keep in mind, size wise, she is just a small hair thicker than her twin sister who has no udder, and she has always been a tad thicker), wouldn't it

One of my yearlings has a precocious udder It has been a while since I had a doe with one so I am double checking something This runs in the family as her dam had one also as a yearling My question is that her udder is very even and actually quite beautiful BUT it is hard and does not feel like what my does udder feel like when they are in

Oh, another question: should I sometimes separate bucklings before 8 weeks? My 2 week old buckling is already jumping up on the does---and ONLY the does, he is really "checking them out" like the bucks do, and even chasing adult does around the pen---apparently, he is VERY precocious!

The other thing I have noticed with precocious milkers is they will tend to take a kid that is not theirs if you have a doe that is not keeping up with her kids I had a doe this year that took a kid that was not hers with no coaxing what so ever That was a good thing for us as mom just could not feed her triplets

I was thinking about this I know you prefer the metal boxes because they are easier to sanitize, but perhaps if they sat inside a simple wooden frame made of 2x4s, they would be more stable The wood would also provide a bit of a step back up for those precocious popples who pop out early Just an idea

It is kind of like crossing a nubie boer only on a smaller scale The two breeds have two different purposes, so you are hoping for a good milker that gives some meat It doesn't always work out that way But they do rate high on the "cute" scale which is pleasing to kids Not as cute as pure pygmys, but they aren't quite as precocious either
