When Remo came out with its Gold Crown sets in the early-mid 2000s, they have new shells called Advanced Acousticon Interestingly, Remo dropped the molded bearing edges and returned to cut edges for these drums In an interview in Modern Drummer, a Remo rep said that the molded edge wasn't working for them but didn't explain exactly what he meant

Remo has always been a big dog in the area of drum heads and has a bit of a following for their world percussion instruments Their djembes in particular are very popular As for their drum kits, they never became a major player That isn't because of quality Their drums sound great and I've found them to have good build quality

I tried the Remo's at Guitar Center one day and they felt weird I even compared them to the heads on a Roland e-kit and the Roland's felt more realistic If I had to use low volume heads, I'd probably go with Aquarian Super Pads or R-toms low volume heads Either of those can just be placed on top of your normal heads

The aquarians seem to be under greater tension in the hoops to start with than their remo equivalent, so just above wrinkle results in a higher tuning The aquarian dots are more of a fabric than remo’s dots so they give a softer stick attack without the sort of plastic slap of black dots

Remo still have to up their QC Getting a bad Remo head that doesn’t fit is becoming a rule and happens way too often Ambs, Emps etc My Tama Star drums are undersized and have a slight outside roundover Everytime I buy a batch of Remo’s I cross my fingers they are ok Usually there’s at least one that’s too tight to fit

Looking to find out before making the actual purchase, what would be a better bet- The Aquarian American Vintage head vs Remo Classic fit for an early 60's Gretsch Round Badge Drum that is an extremely tight fit (see photo with notch cut) The Remo head is a tad more expensive, don't know
