I agree Remo coatings for batter heads don't seem to have much of a life-span I seldom use coated heads, prefer textured heads for snares so have limited experience To my ears, Evans heads seem to fit a more modern sound that emphasizes attack at the expense of resonance i would rather have the resonance, ergo i use mostly Remo heads 1 2 3

Remo sent me a set of heads for him He used a Coated Ambassador over a clear Ambassador on the high tom, and Coated Emperors over clear Ambassadors on the floor toms I really liked that combination, and I've been using it ever since (Sometimes I use coated Ambassadors on the resonant side )

P D Siddall, Your drums are Remo Bravo II in Blue Chromeburst Quadura finish These sets were first offered in Remo's 1999 catalog and continued production into 2001 as far as I know Made in Valencia, Ca with Acousticon-R shells which are the same shells as the Mastertouch line

Remo has long had a reputation for using a coating mixture and application process that doesn't hold up well over time There are some factor tour videos out there that show the process I was at D'Adddario when we were developing the UV coating, which is screen printed onto the film prior to bending (the process where the collar is formed)

Remo's collar is designed to require the seating process so many of us learned with those heads in order to fit onto most drums The Evans Level 360 collar was a design change made to remove the need for seating and make it easier to tune while increasing the tuning range (which it delivered on)

Clear Evans G1 vs Clear Remo Ambassador on a 12" tom The Ambassador sounded warmer and more appealing to my ears, the G1 was more ticky and plastic sounding, but I think that diminishes somewhat after they've been really broken-in and played for a couple months I prefer the Aquarian Classic Clears over either of them

I got one of the first-generation Remo tunable pads around 1962 – 1963 Unlike today's version the tension hoop was metal and did not have the raised rim that allows you to practice rim shots It consisted of a composite base upon which sat a metal hoop that provided a bearing edge for the drumhead There was a foam rubber disk inside of the metal hoop; the drumhead fit over this bearing
