The park has close 27 miles of trail at the Western end of Cades Cove because they are impassable This means a lot of trees down, or in some cases the trail slid down the mountain with the trees You dont want to get over there and have to identify an alternate route wiht no extra time available

As I understand it, there are no cell towers anywhere inside the park So the only time you will have any cell service is when you are near the park boundary (such as climbing out of Fontana) or on a mountain peak with a good line-of-sight to a tower outside the park

If the weather is good, then Clingman's offers 360 degree views from the tower You're have several sectional views in the first 2-3 miles Much of Thunderhead Mountain offers good views, especially the western peak (Rocky Top) From Rocky Top, you can clearly see Cades Cove if the weather is good You can also get great views from Gregory's Bald

The Smokies aren't as crowded as you think 99% of its visitation is confined to the roads and Cades Cove The AT there has some hikers of course, but no more than most other AT sections IMO There really is no comparison between the GSMNP and the SNP from a scenic perspective Smokies hands down Ryan

For those trying to get from Cades Cove (TN) to Fontana Lake (NC), Parsons Branch (the one way road) is closed From what the rangers told us, it will be closed for a few more weeks due to a wash out We enjoyed this road because it allowed people another point into the AT from SE part of the park

I called both of the ones listed above to go from Cades Cove to NFG, which is considerably shorter, and they wanted in the neighborhood of $150 For that section I seriously considered hitchhiking (but changed my plans), your route would be a challenging hitch
