I'm no concrete expert but I do understand about spalling and the thaw freeze cycles regarding ice melt and such So that being said what would be preferred for what I'm calling "new" concrete We have a site that is new construction and the walks (400' + -) were poured in September

You don't need nearly as much ice melt as most people put on walks the excess icemelt is typically the reason for damage to concrete and landscape if you use 800 pounds per acre as a guideline Then a 4 foot walk , 100 feet long is only going to use 7-8 pounds of product (more if you're trying to melt if packed snow or ice)

The label says to wear gloves when handling it, and like most chemical melters, it's not good for precast concrete I think it's supposed to work down to -15° F Seems to do a good job on ice, and I haven't had any complaints from our two Labs

Here in Iowa we use a product called Safe walk it is a product derived by corn and it is not as harsh on concrete as other ice melt products If still will track into your building entrances as well as any other ice melt product but it does a nice job melting and it will not harm your greenscapes Safe walk is made in Buffalo Center Iowa

Can anyone tell me what temperature Knox Ice Melter is effective to I cant seem to find it anyone but I thought I read somewhere it was 25 degrees Im thining of purchasing this product for some driveways and walks due to its "safe for concrete and grass" statement but dont want to purchase it if its non-effective at lower temps

yes, i'm bored ahem anywho, we had a bunch of new concrete installed this past summer the contractor said 'absolutely no de-icer on it, or they will not warranty their work' we put down a sealer on the concrete in the fall, and that seems to have done the trick no issues with de-icers spalling the new concrete so far
