The SMG system built in the 645 650 is the same as built in the Non-M E60, Z4 E85 and E46 models It's the 6-speed Non-M SMG (also often referenced as SSG) which is completely different to the SMG II (M3) and SMG III (M5 and M6)

EDIT: and yes, SMG-III can be made to shift fairly well with carefully timed and measured lifts, but it's still a pain because you're not controlling the clutch, so you can't coordinate clutch gas You have to pull the paddle, then learn how to time your lift to your paddle pull so that it lines up with the clutch engagement
