- Safeway – Groceteria. com
Safeway Last updated on 30 April 2025 I took the photo you see above in Lodi, California sometime in 1994 I didn’t know it at the time, but taking that picture was the genesis of this site

This section consists of a narrative history of Safeway It is currently being rewritten and new pages are being added as they are completed There is also the original (and somewhat incomplete and inaccurate) version of the history from the early years of this site It will be removed when the new pages are complete Photos and other material will also be added, so as long as this notice
- Sacramento Chain Grocery History Overview - Groceteria. com
Safeway continued to be Sacramento’s dominant chain throughout the 1970s, but with some significant changes among its locations While the branches on J Street and Franklin Boulevard had been open for more than thirty years, both were now doing business in new and modern buildings, and both closed late in the decade

Safeway crossed the $2 billion national sales mark in 1957, with 1958 stores in operation Robert Magowan succeeded Ling Warren as Safeway’s president in 1955, much to the relief of many store managers who believed that 20 years was enough and that Warren’s ideas were wearing thin
- Safeway History – Page 3 – Groceteria. com
In 1940, Safeway’s 2671 stores were still primarily located west of the Mississippi River, with only one major Eastern outpost in the Washington DC Northern Virginia area In January, 1941, the DC stores, most of which had operated under the Sanitary and Piggly Wiggly banners, adopted the Safeway nameplate, ending the last of Safeway’s multiple brands following the mergers of the 1930s

Safeway was perhaps somewhat conservative in the move to supermarkets; A P closed or consolidated more than half its 15000 stores during the 1930s, while Safeway’s store count dropped by only about a quarter The first Safeway supermarket units were also somewhat smaller than those of some competitors
- Kansas City Area – Groceteria. com
Kansas City is fascinating in that it was served for decades by all of the “big three” (A P, Kroger, and Safeway) and in that all three chains pulled out in about a ten-year period starting in the late 1970s After this, KC was left with one local chain on the way down (Milgram) and a collection of independents, franchises, and co-ops Except for the presence of limited assortment chains
- Vons – Groceteria. com
Vons purchased many stores from Safeway in 1988, giving Safeway a stake in the company Safeway acquired the remainder in 1997; Fresno County is the dividing line between the Safeway and Vons banners, although the actual stores are more or less indistinguishable anyway
