I have poured over as much info as I can find on the net for various shark dentition's from juvenile to adult While it superficially resembles a few different kinds of sharks teeth, the small serrated cusp on one shoulder and a thin serrated ridge on the other shoulder of a non serrated crown is causing some confusion!

I know the bourlette on a shark tooth is the chevron shaped material between the enamel and the root, but what was it actually? Clearly it is not root or enamel, but did it serve a specific purpose? Was it structural? An attachment point for a ligament? A conduit for nutrients into the tooth?

I have never heard of a fossil locality in the Byers-Last Chance area - interesting find I have seen shark teeth from a site 20 miles southeast of Pueblo, CO (Carlile Shale, Cretalamna appendiculata, Ptychodus whipplei, small Scapanorhynchus, etc ) I have also seen teeth from 25 miles southwest of Fowler, CO

In East TN the sediments are too old for modern sharks teeth However, as Tim mentioned, there are sites where Paleozoic shark-like fish teeth (Bradyodonts) may be found (though in general, these tend not to look anything like modern sharks teeth with only few exceptions ) Edited April 22, 2012 by JimB88
