I recently have thought about getting back into 78's and was thinking that I would maybe get a period victrola to play them on Steve, I remember you have a Victrola that you love the sound of Does anyone have any advice on what to look for in a vintage Victrola? What should I watch out for?

These Victrola’s basically have a bunch of replaceable nails for a stylus Works great My question is, how can you tell which records were made to be played with the “nail” stylus, vs a 78 that requires a proper 78 style cartridge stylus? I assume in the 40’s and 50’s these “nail” stylus’ were not what was used

The safe bet is to get a true mono cartridge that can play a v-groove and use that on the old 78s It will do just fine, it won't destroy the music any more then the 100g + "tracking" weight of an old victrola Note I own a few crank victrolas as well as mono v-groove LPs and have a variety of cartridges and needles for just these reasons
