We use Voile skis because the fishscale versions work great for this and in the backcountry they ski the down almost as well as the regular base skis But, like you found out they are pricey and hard to find used For us these are primary skis and used most of the time, so the performance and fun outweighs the cost

You can get great alpine-dimension traction-base skis from Voile, Altai, Rossignol, OAC, Summitcone, etc There are plenty of lean AT boots in the 800-900g range that are also comfy, high-performance, and easy to transition (FWIW, Alpina Alaska 75 boots are ~1100g)

Voile skis are outstanding, mostly because they took the construction of a regular ski and added waxless base material I think (but have never personally confirmed) that Altai and SummitCone are in the same boat Many others are chintzier and, IMO, not great skis (Rossi BC skis, for example) but are fine for casual meadow skipping

So, for example, Voile has directions for finding boot center, and measurements for all their skis in relation to mounting bindings, such that boot center is located per their recommended location And this is what you do, TomH ? I’m still interested to know if others have different ideas on this, and what the thinking is on that
