OP, WWOOF is technically illegal While I've never personally heard of this happening to anyone that tried out WWOOF in Japan, compensation of ANY kind is prohibited under a Tourist Visa, this compensation includes food and accomodation

Considering WWOOF exists in many countries and is not one single organization, perhaps you should compare countries and places, not “WWOOF” itself I did for six months in Japan, and being a very safe country, then yeah of course the experience was safe It’s a well-run program they have
