I also don't want to download the modified dinput8 recommended in many places What DOES work for me is installing (from MS) the latest vcdist (x86) copying that into the game's steam folder and ALSO (since I have more than 4 cores) doing the msconfig, boot, advanced, number of cpus=8 config mod Remember to change it back when done with SM1
