hologram
n 1: the intermediate photograph (or photographic record) that
contains information for reproducing a three-dimensional
image by holography [synonym: {hologram}, {holograph}]

hologram \hol"o*gram\, n.
A photographic image giving the observer a seemingly
three-dimensional view of the represented object. The
three-dimensional effect is produced by exposing a
photographic recording medium to an interference pattern
generated by a coherent beam of light (as from a laser)
reflected from the subject, interacting with a beam directly
from the source. The full three-dimensional effect requires
illumination of the image with coherent light, but less
perfect three-dimensional visual effects may also be observed
when the hologram is illuminated with white light.

  • Holography - Wikipedia
A hologram represents a recording of information regarding the light that came from the original scene as scattered in a range of directions rather than from only one direction, as in a photograph This allows the scene to be viewed from a range of different angles, as if it were still present
  • Hologram Technology Explained: Types Uses (2026)
A hologram is a three-dimensional (3D) projection that appears to exist in physical space without requiring special glasses or screens It’s created using light diffraction to display a fully dimensional image that can be viewed from multiple angles
  • How Holograms Work | HowStuffWorks
In a hologram, the two intersecting light wave fronts form a pattern of hyperboloids — three-dimensional shapes that look like hyperbolas rotated around one or more focal points
  • Holography | Optics, 3D Imaging Laser Technology | Britannica
Holography, means of creating a unique photographic image without the use of a lens The photographic recording of the image is called a hologram, which appears to be an unrecognizable pattern of stripes and whorls but which—when illuminated by coherent light, as by a laser beam—organizes the light
  • HOLOGRAM Definition Meaning - Merriam-Webster
A hologram is a picture of a "whole" object, showing it in three dimensions We've all seen cheap hologram images on credit cards and ID cards (where they help prevent copying)
  • What Is Holographic and How Does Holography Work?
A hologram is created by splitting a laser beam into two paths One beam, called the reference beam, goes directly to a recording surface (like a special film or plate) The other beam bounces off the object being recorded
  • Hologram: definition, operation and uses
A hologram is a three-dimensional image obtained by recording the interference between two coherent light beams, generally coming from a laser It recreates the volume, depth, and angles of a real object, without glasses or headphones
  • Introduction to Holography - ThoughtCo
Holograms create three-dimensional images by using light interference patterns from laser beams Lasers make holograms because their light is coherent, meaning it has the same frequency and phase Holograms are used in arts, data storage, security, and were improved by lasers invented in 1960
  • Holography – University Physics Volume 3
The name hologram means “entire picture” (from the Greek holo, as in holistic) because the image is three-dimensional Holography is the process of producing holograms and, although they are recorded on photographic film, the process is quite different from normal photography
  • What is a Hologram? – Holocenter
A hologram is a physical structure that diffracts light into an image The term ‘hologram’ can refer to both the encoded material and the resulting image A holographic image can be seen by looking into an illuminated holographic print or by shining a laser through a hologram and projecting the image onto a screen
