Niter \Ni"ter\, Nitre \Ni"tre\, n. [F. nitre, L. nitrum native
soda, natron, Gr. ?; cf. Ar. nit[=u]n, natr[=u]n natron. Cf.

1. (Chem.) A white crystalline semitransparent salt;
potassium nitrate; saltpeter. See {Saltpeter}.
