Spell \Spell\, v. t. [imp. & p. p. {Spelled}; p. pr. & vb. n.
{Spelling}.] [AS. spelian to supply another's place.]
To supply the place of for a time; to take the turn of, at
work; to relieve; as, to spell the helmsman.
